The Emotions That Come With Living a Gluten-Free Lifestyle

Here’s a topic that I feel must be discussed when it comes to living a gluten-free lifestyle.

Without a doubt a life change can be hard on emotions.

Throw in a FOREVER life-change of avoiding gluten, and that can be tough.

Some may argue that it shouldn’t be so hard to avoid gluten. A gluten-free lifestyle shouldn’t cause emotions and such to surface.

However, at the end of the day…any lifestyle change, for better for worse, is hard.

Cutting out a HUGE source of what you used to eat, can be hard.

And it’s ok to feel the emotions that come with it all.

When I was first diagnosed with celiacs I cried most every day for the first two months. I didn’t know what to eat, it was a lot of stress to do something so simple…to eat!

However, as time went on my tears faded and things got easier.

Even now…after years of living a gluten-free lifestyle, I still would say I have a few days in the year where I get annoyed or emotional about the food limitations.

And that’s ok.

The world has improved access to gluten free foods which is wonderful. But I guess there’s still a bit of a “mourning” that surfaces just realizing that all flour and wheat are cut out of your life forever.

So my advice is, feel the emotions, don’t dwell on them, look at all the resources there are in the world now for living gluten-free, and move on.

Do you have days where the emotions catch up to you when it comes to living a gluten-free lifestyle?

I would love to hear.
