It’s Not Easy to Send Your First Child to School All Day…

To the moms who have their first child going to school all day.

And Then They Decide To Grow

My son he went to school all day,

He’s excited to be in first grade.

As he walked to greet his teacher, he looked back at me and waved.

I smiled, I waved, I showed him a brave face…

But inside I wasn’t ok.

First day of 1st grade!

My worries, concerns, and stressors took over, and I wanted to stay with him all day.

Would he have someone to sit by at lunch?

At recess would others make sure to include them in their play?

Would he listen and understand all that he needs to?

I just want to make sure he’s ok.

All day long I kept busy, taking care of the two little ones home, but my mind was on my sweet son.

The realization of my anxieties hit me hard… I knew I wasn’t there to protect him.

All his life, until now, I have been the one to protect and guard him most the day.

I was always there for him when he needed me.

Now, I hope he has learned enough on his own… as I send him on his way alone.

I miss that time with my son.

6 years old

Even though I’m so glad he’s learning and growing…

The realization and truth is, this is just the beginning of the growth.

Now he goes to school all day… and time tends to tick quicker.

I know deep down these years will press on… faster and faster everyday.

It is my first glimpse of watching my son grow and be independent… and yet, sad because I loved all of our time spent together.

So yes a little piece of my heart goes with my boy as he leaves for school, I miss being able to be there for him and watch over him,

And yet… he’s doing great and having fun.. I’m so glad he’s enjoying school.

It’s hard for us moms to experience big changes.

The emotions are raw and real.

These kids of ours, they are our world.

And we send them to school, to learn, grow, and achieve.

And one day, they will spread their wings, and fly so that they can create that positive change in the world.

If only they knew what a mamas heart goes through.

And still, we moms are grateful and thankful for their growth.

These children truly are the future.

And these moms will forever be their biggest fans.

Have You Smiled Today?

Just a friendly reminder to smile today.

Just make that conscious effort to smile.

Why?

You never know the long lasting affect a smile can make on someone.

Years ago, when I was at college I was struggling a bit.

No one had done anything to hurt me, but I was hurting inside.

What I didn’t know was that I had celiacs disease.

My stomach was alway upset, and I was very tired.

My physical health was affecting my mental and emotional health and it was wearing on me.

One day— a random stranger looked at me and smiled … almost like they wanted to say “chin up, it will be ok.”

And that smile was all I needed to push through the day.

I’m sure you can relate to having hard days.. so let’s be that person to smile.

The impact a simple smile can make goes far.

A Gluten-Free Dessert for the Family!

Growing up whenever we would go to my grandmas house she would either have cookies or these tasty peanut butter bars for us to eat.

My 4 year old loves to help me bake !

It took me a bit, but I finally figured out how to make these peanut butter bars taste great using gluten free flour and such.

Making these peanut butter bars can be a fun family event. Click here for the recipe.

My two kids helped with all the ingredients and even helped me flatten down the cookie mixture onto the pan.

We don’t do dessert nights every night, but sometimes having dessert with a scripture lesson is fun and enjoyable.

Our family will study lesson topics from “Come Follow Me.”

We are members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We love to learn and grow in our gospel, and Come Follow Me is such a great resource.

A Quote that I Love for so many Reasons….

Have you ever come accorded a quote and it just resonated with you?

Well this quote did that to me.

This quote is by a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

However, even if you’re not a member of the church I feel that this quote applies to everyone.

It’s easy in our world to see the negative and the discouragement all around us.

And yet, if we look all around us, we truly do have so many reasons to be optimistic.

If we all look at the small and large blessings that impact our lives.. our minds shift and we can clearly see that there is so much HOPE on the world.

Look for the positive.

Look for the light.

You can always find it.

And there you will find hope!

Whatever you may be struggling with, find the blessings, and optimism in your situations in life.

What My Sons Wish is For First Grade …

I have a sign for the kids to hold as I take a picture of their first day.

As I was writing on it.. one question said “their wish.”

I asked my son, who is going into first grade what his wish is for first grade.

Without skipping a beat he said:

I wish to have a good school year and that no one gets in trouble and has to go to the principals office.

It was such a cute reply.

Number 1 for First Grade!

We had just talked yesterday about being kind to everyone. We talked about bullies and how to handle them. And we talked about being a good friend to everyone.

I thought it was cute that my little guy just wanted a great school year and for no one to get into trouble! In his little mind, that’s what was important.

So here’s to a great school year to all!

All the kids holding up #1

With hopes that no one has to go to the principals office 😉

6 Back-to-School traditions to make the new school year exciting and fun for Your Kids!

My oldest is now in first grade … so we have been working on creating some fun, family back-to-school ideas.

Going back to school can be an exciting time for kids, and yet, at times it can be nerve wracking.

My son had his moments of stress last year with kindergarten. He had days where he just broke down and didn’t want to leave me, and cried about going to school.

That always hurts a mamas heart.. and we had lots of talks about why school is fun and important.

As time went on, the tears were fewer and far between for my son.

I want all my kids to always know that school is a fun and exciting place. School isn’t just “hard work,” but it’s a place to meet new friends, learn new things, and enjoy life.

So here is a list of things we do at our house to get the kids excited for school!

1- Back to school shopping! Even if the kids don’t need much, we always get them a new outfit, and if their backpack is getting old and worn a new backpack. For first grade they will need a lunch bag too. Back to school shopping is a fun and exciting time to get the kids excited for a new school year!

2-Back to school dinner the night before school starts. Basically- we make a tasty meal that the kids love, include a yummy dessert and decorate the table a bit with fun back-to-school decor such as apples and maybe some whiteboard markers etc. The dinner doesn’t have to be extravagant .. just simple and fun to remind the kids that you care and that you too are excited for them to start back to school.

3- Back to school blessings. We are members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. When I was growing up, my dad would always give us kids priesthood blessings the night before school started. These blessings were comforting and reassuring as a new school year was about to start. We do this with our kids now too, I notice my children feel so special when they get individual blessings from their father.

4- Back to School Door decorating. Many of these items can be found at the dollar store, it doesn’t have to be pricey. Mainly, decorate your kids door at night so they wake up to a door covered in pencils, treats, erasers, and such .. with a sign encouraging them to enjoy their new year of school.

5- Write a note on the mirror. This is simple but always fun for kids. Get a whiteboard marker and write a quick note to your kids on their bathroom mirror, motivating them to be excited for the new school year! This is a simple and easy way to remind your kids that you care.

6- Walk your kids to class the first day. Yes, this may apply to younger elementary kids more, but a new class and teacher can be intimidating… sometimes simply walking your child to their classroom door is the encouragement they need to be ready and excited for the new school year.

What other traditions would you suggest? I’d love to hear!

And hope the school year is great for everyone this year !
