What do you do that makes your heart happy?
As we think about life and how we live it, isn’t it interesting that as adults sometimes we forget to have fun? Now some people will say, “Oh we go out drinking and have fun on the weekends,” and perhaps that works for them. However, when you stop to think about it it’s not the drinks that are fun necessarily, the friendships are what people enjoy.
So why is it, that we forget that it’s okay, if not even really important, to have hobbies as adults? I think the big answer is TIME. For me, I am a mom of two toddlers and my life revolves around my sweet children. However, something I am slowly learning…is that I am a better mom when I take time to to do even small things that I enjoy—hobbies. I am not saying that your hobbies have to take up ALL of your time, but it’s amazing how much happier and more fulfilled we can feel when we take time to do those little things that make us enjoy life.

For example, I love anything artsy or crafty. My friend makes beautiful cakes, and for my daughters birthday I thought “Why not try making a cake?!” The cake process was fun and exciting because it was something new for me to try. The cake didn’t end up perfect, but it wasn’t too bad either. I loved decorating it and I decided I am going to keep trying to make cakes again in the future. I felt accomplished, and baking the cake gave me that little self-esteem boost that I so needed for that week.

Something as simple as starting a new project, or learning something new its amazing how it can help us feel better about ourselves. It’s not selfish to have hobbies, it just takes some time management. I am by no means encouraging hours away from your family or your job to enjoy fun things. That’s not always practical or healthy. What I am saying is that it is HEALTHY to do things that make you smile. Life is too short to not enjoy the little things. I love seeing and watching people thrive in their hobbies. Sometimes those hobbies turn into a job and sometimes they don’t. At the end of the day it’s always good to find things that make you smile.

I love the quote “There is a fountain inside you. Don’t walk around with an empty bucket. “ —Rumi
I believe that quote is encouraging in so many ways. Rumi reminds us that we need to be fulfilled as a person to truly develop into who we want to be, and therefore, to be able to help those around us.
I encourage you to find a small hobby everyday to pursue. Perhaps you stay home with your little ones like me, you can still take time for that hobby. Don’t use anything as an excuse. Find the TIME for things that make you smile and feel accomplished. It may mean you work on your hobby while your little ones take a nap, or during your lunch break at work. There is always a moment for YOU and for those things that bring peace to your mind and heart. It’s not selfish, it’s helping to shape you into the person you want to be.

So stop reading this…and go find your hobby! The possibilities are endless and I can’t wait for you to find that something that makes you smile:)
